FIRST YEAR
Introduction to Journalism: News Literacy, Reporting, and Writing
First semester
This introductory course focuses on a variety of journalistic topics that will allow students to gain a general understanding of news writing, reporting, and production. During the first semester, students will learn how to gather information, research, interview, fact check, and write a solid news story and headline. In addition, students will learn how to effectively use social media tools such as Twitter to report the news and promote their writing.
Introduction to Photojournalism
Second semester
During this semester, students will delve into introductory photojournalism. They will learn the basics of shooting with a DLSR camera, and will learn about what makes for a powerful photo in journalism. In addition, students will learn about the rules of composition and caption writing. As a final capstone, students will pitch and create photo essays.
SECOND YEAR
Multimedia Storytelling and Production
Two semesters
Students will learn how to report and produce multimedia news packages that will include writing, photography, and audio. Students will continue learning photojournalism skills, including shooting in manual and working to master DLSR cameras. Students will also learn the basics of audio reporting and production. They will put together audio/photo slideshows, and create audio podcasts and radio stories. In addition, students will learn the basics of website design and production, utilizing tools such as WordPress, Weebly, and Adobe Photoshop. Finally, students will delve deeper into the writing process. They will develop reporting beats, and learn how to write specifically for online news sites.
THIRD YEAR
Video Storytelling and News Broadcast
Two semesters
Students will learn how to create video stories and news packages. Students will learn how to shoot, edit, and write for the television and the web, using professional video cameras and audio equipment. Students will then learn how to put together a taped newscast. Students will work as producers, writers, camera operators, video reporters, and news anchors. Finally, students will be expected to create a short documentary news piece, which will be shown at a Francis Lewis film festival.
